40 Meta Quest Tips and Tricks for Beginners and Professionals

Whether you're setting up your first headset or you've had one for years, these tips cover screen sharing, battery and performance, privacy, comfort, troubleshooting, and a few app recommendations worth knowing about.

Screen Sharing & Casting

  • Cast to a TV: Press the camera button in the Quest menu to stream your view to a TV or another screen on the same Wi-Fi network — good for multiplayer sessions or showing someone what you're seeing.
  • Cast to your phone: In the Meta Horizon app, go to Menu > Devices > Meta Quest, tap "Cast," then "Start." Useful specifically for helping someone remotely without needing a TV nearby.
  • Where recordings are saved: Screen recordings land in the "Oculus → Videoshots" folder when the headset is connected to a PC. If you're not getting save alerts, check that Do Not Disturb mode is off.
  • Quick screenshot/recording: Press Meta + right thumb trigger for a screenshot; hold the same combo to start or stop a recording.

Setting Up a New User

  • Have them open the Meta Horizon app on their phone, go to Menu > My Library, and tap "Start" on the game or app you want to launch for them — easier than navigating menus inside the headset for the first time.
  • Enable "Nearby Device" mode (Settings > Privacy) if you're setting up multiple headsets in the same room — it helps them detect each other automatically.

Battery & Performance

  • Extend battery life: Turn off Wi-Fi and enable Extended Battery Mode (System > Power Settings) for solo sessions — this dims the screen and lowers resolution to save power.
  • Charging: Use a 20W+ charger for meaningfully faster, more efficient charging.
  • 120Hz refresh rate: Enable under Settings > System > Display for smoother visuals — worth knowing it drains battery noticeably faster.
  • Auto-launch: If the headset powers on the moment you put it on and you don't want that, disable it under Devices > Meta Quest > Power Settings > Auto-Launch.
  • Wi-Fi 6E router: Makes a real difference for streaming and reduces lag if you're using wireless PC streaming.

Privacy & Security

  • Under Settings > Privacy, control who can see your activity status.
  • Set app-specific passwords for apps holding personal data (Settings > Privacy > App Lock).
  • Enable phone notifications through Menu > Devices > Meta Quest > Headset Settings > Phone Notifications, so you're not missing texts/calls while in a session.

Comfort & Health

  • Avoid VR sickness: Check the built-in comfort rating before installing a new app — green means comfortable, red means it's more likely to cause motion sickness. Start with green-rated apps if you're new to VR.
  • Take breaks: Every 45-60 minutes helps reduce eye strain on longer sessions.
  • Head strap upgrades: Aftermarket straps (like BoboVR) redistribute weight and reduce facial pressure for longer sessions.
  • Recenter your view: Hold the Meta button on the right controller for 2 seconds if your view feels misaligned.

Hardware Care

  • Never expose the lenses to direct sunlight — they can concentrate light like a magnifying glass and damage the internal display. This applies indoors near sunny windows too, not just outdoor use.
  • Use lens protectors during storage or transport to prevent scratches.
  • An optional IR tracking add-on can improve motion tracking accuracy in dimly lit rooms, if you regularly play in low light.

Troubleshooting

  • Frozen headset: Hold Power + Volume Down until the Meta logo appears, then select Factory Reset. Note this erases all data on the headset, so treat it as a last resort.
  • Requesting a refund: Available if you've used the app less than 2 hours and it's within 14 days of purchase — request through Menu > Settings > Purchases in the Horizon app.
  • Room setup for mixed reality: Settings > Physical Space > Room Setup — needed before mixed-reality apps will work correctly.
  • Software updates: Settings > System > Software Update — worth checking manually if a game seems buggier than expected, since fixes often ship this way.

For Developers

After registering as a developer with Meta, enable Developer Mode under Devices > Meta Quest > Developer Settings — this unlocks sideloading for testing apps outside the official store.

Worth Trying

  • Thrill of the Fight 2 — one of the better VR boxing simulators, doubles as a workout.
  • Asgard's Wrath 2 — console-quality graphics, good showcase of what the hardware can do.
  • Aim XR — free multiplayer shooter, similar feel to Counter-Strike.
  • SculptrVR — 3D sculpting/drawing, worth a look if you're creatively inclined.
  • Skybox VR or Bigscreen — for watching movies/shows in a virtual theater, solo or with friends.
