Upload a stitched panorama to Facebook and sometimes it just sits there — flat, stretched at the edges, no little globe icon, no drag-to-explore effect. Just a wide, warped rectangle that somehow looks worse than the original photo. If that's happened to you, the image itself usually isn't the problem. It's almost always the metadata Facebook can't find.

What Actually Makes Facebook Treat a Photo as "360"

Facebook doesn't decide a photo is spherical just because it's wide. It looks for two specific things: an equirectangular projection at a 2:1 aspect ratio (think 6000×3000 rather than a typical 3:2 photo crop), and an embedded XMP tag — specifically ProjectionType=equirectangular — sitting quietly inside the file's metadata. Strip that tag out, and Facebook has no way of knowing your image is anything but a very wide flat photo. That's the whole trick behind converters like the one above: they don't just resize your picture, they write the metadata Facebook's system is actually scanning for.

Photos straight off a proper 360 camera — a Ricoh Theta, an Insta360, whatever — usually carry this data automatically. It's when a panorama gets edited afterward, run through Photoshop, or exported from certain stitching apps that the tag quietly disappears. You end up with a technically fine 360 image that Facebook reads as ordinary.

Uploading It the Right Way

A couple of details trip people up here, and neither is obvious from the interface itself:

  • Upload the file directly as a photo post. Sharing it as a link — even a direct image URL — skips Facebook's 360 detection entirely, since the interactive viewer only activates on directly uploaded files.
  • On mobile, you can upload straight from your camera roll through the Facebook app. If you shot the panorama using your phone's native panorama mode, there's a decent chance the EXIF data is already intact and Facebook will pick it up without any extra work.
  • Before you actually hit post, check the preview. A correctly tagged image shows a small globe indicator on the draft — that's your confirmation Facebook recognized the format. No globe, no 360 view once it's live.

When You Post It and It Still Comes Out Flat

This is the single most common complaint, and it's almost never a camera or resolution problem. It's metadata loss. Any editing pass — cropping, color correction, resizing in a tool that doesn't preserve XMP data — can wipe the tag clean off. The fix is to re-inject it before uploading, which is exactly what the converter above does automatically instead of making you dig through command-line tools like ExifTool by hand.

Worth knowing too: Facebook's detection has gotten stricter over time, not looser. What worked reliably a few years back sometimes fails silently now, with the photo just posting flat and no error message explaining why. If your file used to work and suddenly doesn't, metadata stripped somewhere in your editing workflow is the first thing to check.

A Few Things People Don't Expect

Once it's live, viewers can explore a 360 photo by dragging on desktop or tilting their phone on mobile — and yes, it'll render in VR headsets too, for anyone who wants the fuller immersive version. But don't expect the same experience if you cross-post to Instagram. Instagram has no native 360 viewer, so the same equirectangular file just shows up there as a flat, visibly distorted rectangle. If you want a version for Instagram, export a normal wide-crop preview separately and point people to Facebook (or a link in your bio) for the interactive one.

None of this is set in stone forever — Facebook tweaks how it reads image metadata every so often, so if a method that used to work stops working, it's worth re-checking whether the platform's requirements shifted rather than assuming your photo or your camera is at fault.
